Engine Management System (EMS)

An electronic system that monitors the operation and performance of a vehicle's engine. It may monitor engine characteristics such as the rpm, coolant temperature and intake airflow and can control items such as the spark timing and fuel metering according to pre-programmed schedules.

The system may also be linked to braking and traction aids so that it can coordinate their operation with that of the engine.
