Immobilizer

A security device designed to prevent thieves from stealing a vehicle even if they gain entry. There are two types of immobilizer: mechanical (such as a steering lock) or electronic. An electronic immobilizer forms part of the engine control unit (ECU), and prevents the car from being started unless it recognises signals from a transponder in the ignition key.
