Ringing

The illegal practice of disguising a stolen vehicle by using a vehicle identity taken from a car that has been written off. Although thieves may sometimes only change the license plate, they will also very often attempt to forge the vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis number. This can make a 'ringer' very hard to detect. Buyers should always ensure that all a vehicle's VINs (stamped into the bodywork, on the chassis plate and behind the windshield) match each other and the supplied documentation.
