Applying for a Learners Permit

Before you can learn to drive a car, you must apply for a learners permit. You must:

• be the minimum age specified by your state
• supply the required documents
  
• meet the minimum eyesight requirements
• pay the appropriate fee

In addition, you will need to pass a written test, which is usually a multiple-choice computerized test. This will test you on your knowledge of traffic signs, traffic laws and safe driving practices. Oral tests are often available, upon request, for those who have difficulty reading.

You can prepare for the test by reading the Driver's Handbook, which is available for free at your state DMV office. The handbook is available in a number of different languages, as is the test itself. There are also sample questions that will help you practice.

You will learn the outcome of your test straight away. If successful, you will be issued a learners permit, which will enable you to drive accompanied by a person who has a driver's license. You can also schedule an appointment for a driving skills  test. If you are unsuccessful, in the majority of cases you will be allowed to retake it free of charge.
