Testing the Lights
At least once a month, you should carry out a thorough check to ensure that all your lights are clean and in good working order. Make sure you check:
- registration plate light
- side lights
- headlamps (dipped and high beam)
- brake lamps
- turn signals (front and back)
- sidemarker lights
- backing up light
- hazard flashers
- fog lights
- daytime running lights (if fitted)
Asking a friend to help will make this task much easier, as they can check that the lights are functioning as you operate them from the car. However, if you're on your own, simply test the lights while you are in your garage; you should be able to see them clearly against the wall.
If any of the lights are not working, replace the bulb or fuse straight away; not only can driving with defective lights be hazardous, but it is also illegal.
