Oxydendrum

Family: Ericaceae

Native to the Americas, this genus contains only one species of deciduous tree, generally grown as an ornamental or lawn specimen.

Species

O. arboreum, sourwood, grows to 15-20 m (50-65 ft), with green, bitter-tasting leaves, around 15 cm (6 in) long, that turn crimson during fall, and sprays of white, bell-shaped flowers during summer. It is some-times grown to attract bees.

Cultivation

Plant in a well-drained, lime-free soil mulched with leaf mold or cow manure. Keep well watered during spring and summer. For propagation, use cuttings, layers or seed.

Climate

Zone 5. Best in a cool, moist climate.
