Application Form Tips

Most employers will review your application form before they choose to see you, and as such will form an important first impression of you. To increase your chances of being selected for interview, follow these guidelines:

Be Careful

Employers may use the application form to judge how well you follow instructions and if you are careful about doing this on your application, they will be more likely to think that you will be careful as an employee. The converse is also true - a messy or careless application will not reflect well on your professional ability or attitude to work.

Be Certain

Know what is being asked before you start. Before you begin to fill in the form, read the entire document carefully. In preparing a model for your replies, work in pencil from a copy. When you have a finished copy that has been very carefully proofread, you can transpose it to the original using a pen or a black ballpoint. Answer each item truthfully. After you complete the form read it again to ensure no information is missing. Keep an extra blank copy in case you make a mistake and make a copy of the final version for your records.

Be Prepared

Always take a sample application form with you to any interview, in case you are asked to fill one out. By having all the information about yourself ready ahead of time, you will be complete and accurate.

Be Neat

Print or write clearly, so that your application can be read easily. Use a reliable black ink pen - this will photocopy more easily.

Be Complete

Fill in the blanks completely, accurately, neatly, and to the best of your ability. Answers should be brief and consistent. Make sure you answer every question. If a question does not apply to you, write "Does not apply".

Be Consistent

Ensure that the details given in your application matches the ones in your resume.

Be Accurate

Make sure all information is correct. Check employment dates, telephone numbers and addresses for accuracy.

Be Correct

Check your answers for correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, completeness, and accuracy.

Be Thorough

Describe all your skills and abilities. Also, list the kind of computers, machinery and equipment you are able to use.

Be Considerate

When listing references, be sure to contact them ahead of time. Have enough references so that you can alternate them every other application, otherwise they will be receiving regular phone calls about you.

Be Informed

Know the deadline for applying and where to deliver your application.
