Covering Letter Tips

  1. Always check the correct spelling of name and title of the person you are writing to, unless you are addressing a blind advertisement - then it should be 'Dear Sir/Madam'.
  2. Explain the purpose of your letter. You either are writing in reply to their advertised need or to express interest in working for their company. You need not refer to their advertisement or the fact that you are sending your resume. That is self-evident.
  3. Introduce yourself, using the key elements from your resume - for example: "International Marketing Manager for a major US engineering firm for over eight years, specialising in marketing to countries across North America and Asia. I have worked extensively in Asia, setting up a number of sales offices in Japan, China and Malaysia".
  4. Highlight some achievements directly against their needs.
  5. If you're writing 'on spec', closeyour letter by asking for an interview - indicate that you will call them in a few days to arrange a mutually convenient time.
  6. If responding to an advert, close by saying that you would be most interested in discussing your application further, and that you look forward to their call.

In summary:

  • Keep the letter short.
  • Date your letter but NOT your resume.
  • Do not mention salary.
  • Focus on their needs.
  • Match your key achievements to their needs.
  • Read your letter aloud to judge whether it sounds right.
  • Check for spelling or typing errors.
  • Keep a record of your mailing for follow-up.
