Retail Banking

Retail Banks are commercial banking businesses whose primary market is in consumer finance.

'National banks' are a banking institution chartered by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), an agency in the US Treasury Department. The designation 'National Association' (or its abbreviation 'NA') or the inclusion of the word 'National' in the bank's name is a required part of the distinguishing legal title of a national bank, as in "Bank of America, N.A."

In contrast, many 'state banks' are chartered by the applicable State Government (normally the State's Department of Banking), although the banks are still typically regulated by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), who insures their deposits.
