Minimizing the Need to Claim

While insurance will compensate financially for the loss of a stolen car, there is little that can help with the inconvenience and shock. Following these guidelines will help to reduce the risk of having your car stolen or broken into.

Hide your Property

Never leave valuable property in your car; if you must, then make sure you leave it in a locked trunk. If you do not have a separate enclosed trunk, make sure that the rear shelf is in position. Remove anything that might look attractive to thieves from view, even if it isn't valuable - they may be tempted to break in just in case it is.

Parking your Car

Thieves like working in shadows, so always park in an open, brightly lit area. In a ticket-exit parking lot, make sure you take the ticket with you; don't ever leave it in the car.

Lock the Car

Always lock your doors and boot; even while the car is in your own driveway or garage, or if you are just leaving it for a few seconds. Take the keys with you - never leave them in the ignition while you run into your home for a forgotten item or while you are paying for gas. It takes seconds for a car thief to take advantage of this opportunity.

Security

Thieves are opportunists, and will often move on to an easier target if they see even a basic level of protection.

Many insurers allow a special premium discount if your car has a professionally-fitted alarm/immobilizer system. Ask your insurer what systems they approve or require.

Windows and Sunroofs

Have all the windows etched with the license number of your car. This helps deter car thieves.

When you leave your car, make sure that all windows and sunroofs are left firmly shut, even on a hot day. For this reason, you should never leave young children or animals alone in a parked car, as this would lead to a serious risk of suffocation.

Remove Information

Don't leave any car ownership documents in your vehicle.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Your insurance policy requires you to take care of your property at all times. If you are careless when leaving your car (such as leaving it unlocked), then any claim for theft may be rejected.
