Before You Move In

If you have planned it right, you may have a period of time between taking over a new home and actually moving in. This will give you an opportunity to get your new home ready and to have any necessary work done before you move in. It is always much easier to work on an empty house.

Cleaning

Whether you do it yourself or hire the professionals to do it for you, an empty house is far easier to clean than a full one.

Decorating

It is much less problematic to decorate before you move in, as you don't have to worry about rearranging rooms or putting dust covers on everything. If you've decided to get new carpets, make sure you do all your decorating before they are fitted.

Renovation and Repairs

Your survey may have brought to light a number of issues that either you (or your lender) want to get fixed as soon as possible. This might include fixing the roof, new plumbing or rewiring. The ideal time to get this work done is before you move in, as it means that you won't have to cope with living on a construction site.

Improvements

You might have decided to refurbish the bathroom, install new windows or upgrade the kitchen. You may have even decided to convert the attic or add an extension. Even relatively simple jobs such as laying carpets or getting existing carpets professionally cleaned are far easier when your house is empty.
