Packing Soft Furnishings and Fabrics

Clothes, Bedding and Drapes

  • Clothing in chests of drawers may be able to be left in situ, although if in doubt pack them separately - the drawers may need to be removed to lighten the load.
  • Clothes on hangers are best transported in traveling armoires; otherwise use sports bags or suitcases.
  • Other clothes, bedding, linen, and drapes can be rolled or folded and transported in large bags.
  • If your bedding for the first night isn't traveling with you in your vehicle, make sure that you keep it separate and easily accessible.

Carpet

  • Clear the carpet of furniture.
  • Roll carpet round a cardboard roller. It can take three people to roll a large carpet.
  • Stand on the carpet, in a row, so that you are facing one end.
  • Lift the edge and walk backwards until about 10 feet of the carpet is lying face down.
  • Put the roller in position and roll up this part of the carpet, so that the right-side is facing out. This will insure that the pile is not crushed.
  • Pick up the roller and walk backwards again, repeating the process until the whole carpet is on the roller.

Rugs

  • Never crush a rug by folding it right side in. Instead, roll it fringe to fringe, right-side outside, so that the pile is stretched not squashed.
  • For valuable rugs, interleave with acid free tissue paper.
