How to Avoid Air Rage

Also known as Sky Rage, the term Air Rage describes the extreme misbehavior by passengers on aircrafts. It is of particular concern due to the cramped conditions inside an aircraft and the inevitable involvement of cabin crew and other passengers. There have been a number of occasions where planes have had to land early to offload disruptive passengers. Legal action is usually taken against those involved, and airlines have the right to refuse to carry those who have previously caused disruption on a flight.

Although cases of air rage seem to be happening more frequently, in reality, these incidences are actually no more common than 20 years ago. However, there is an increased awareness within the industry to report such cases.

Air rage may be caused by a combination of events, including exhaustion due to lack of sleep, delayed flights, the behavior of fellow passengers and the excessive use of alcohol. These factors are often combined with a feeling of helplessness, as well as general psychological feelings of lost control due to the anxiety and stress many people feel when flying.

Surprisingly, it appears that alcohol is not the main cause of air rage, only accounting for 25% of all incidents. Instead, anxiety through delays, cramped conditions and nicotine withdrawal on long-distance flights tend to be the leading causes.

Avoiding Air Rage

  • Tiredness is a major cause of stress and irrational actions. Make sure that you get plenty of rest the night before you fly; this will make you more relaxed and less likely to be irritable.
  • If you are thinking about having a drink while waiting for your flight, you should  be aware that airlines have the right to refuse to carry anyone who is intoxicated.
  • If you feel yourself getting anxious or stressed, go for a short walk, or read a magazine or newspaper.
  • If you are delayed, just accept it. Getting angry and worked up will make not get you to your destination any faster. If you have to be somewhere by a certain time or date, discuss alternate flights and routes with your airline. Phone ahead and explain that you will be delayed. Deal with the problem rather than allowing the problem deal with you.
  • If you do like to drink during a flight, remember that every drink at altitude will have twice the effect at ground level, so drink moderately, and alternate each alcoholic drink with at least one large glass of water.
