Travel Insurance Cover

When choosing a policy, there are a number of areas that you should make sure are covered.

Cancellation and Curtailment

Cancellation is one of the most popular reasons for claims against travel insurers, and so it is vital that you arrange your travel insurance directly after booking your vacation, to provide instant cover.

Medical Treatment

If you are intending to travel to remote areas of less developed countries where medical treatment may not be readily available, make sure that your policy covers repatriation costs if you are seriously injured or taken ill. If you are not staying in a vacation resort, you should also consider choosing an insurer who can also offer a 24 hour help line in your language.

You will need to let your insurer know of any pre-existing medical conditions, or you may not be covered by the policy you purchase.

Hazardous Activities

While on vacation, you may want to take part in activities such as skiing, horse riding, bungee jumping, scuba diving, and more. However, before you try any hazardous activity, make sure you check your policy. Most standard policies will not provide cover for such activities, although many insurance companies will offer it as an extension for an additional premium.

Missing Luggage

If your baggage goes missing, or your cases have been sent to another airport, most policies will allow you to buy suitable essential replacements, which you can claim for on your return.

Theft

If you are unfortunate enough to be a victim of a theft, report it to the police immediately. They will be able to provide you with a statement to show your insurer when you make the claim.

Legal Cover

Make sure you are covered for any personal liability claims and other legal bills. Check to see if you're covered while engaged in certain activities - for example if you play golf on vacation and cause an injury to another person. Many standard insurance policies will not provide such cover.
