Final Checklist

So, you're all ready to set off on your vacation? Well, before you leave home, take a look at the following reminders to make sure you're fully prepared for your trip:

  • Ask a trusted neighbor to collect any post that arrives.
  • Return any library books, rented videos and DVDs.
  • Cancel newspaper and any other deliveries made to your home for the duration of your trip.
  • Make sure all your bills are paid and up to date.
  • Set up timed security lights to help keep your home safe.
  • Leave a spare key with a trusted neighbor, and ask them to keep an eye on your house. Give them a copy of your travel plans, and a contact number in case of emergencies.
  • Reconfirm your flights and any reservations you have made.
  • Store any valuables in a safe place.
  • Unplug and switch off any electrical appliances. This will save energy and minimize the risk of electrical fires.
  • Turn off your heating (or air-conditioning). However, if cold weather is forecast while you're away, it may be advisable to have your heating come on for a couple of hours each day to prevent pipes freezing and bursting.
  • Empty your refrigerator of all perishable items, and make sure you have taken out the trash.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for your journey. Thin layers are a good idea, as you can then easily adapt to the different temperatures en route.
  • Make a final check to ensure that you have everything you need ... tickets, passport, money ...
  • Lock all doors and windows.
  • Make sure you leave plenty of time to get to the airport. If you're early you can relax with a coffee or do some shopping before you board your plane.
